How long does a slate roof last?
A well-fixed natural slate roof commonly lasts 100 years or more, depending on the quality of the slate, the fixings and how exposed the roof is. Imported slates, such as Spanish slate, are usually cheaper than Welsh slate — ask the roofer where the slate comes from and what the supplier says about its expected life.
Is slate roofing suitable for all property types?
Slate suits most pitched roofs with adequate structural support. If the new covering would be noticeably heavier than the old one, the roof structure may need checking — building regulations approval is needed if a new covering increases the weight on the roof by 15 per cent or more. Ask the roofer whether a structural check is needed before you agree a price.
